OverviewOur programs are broken into two distinctive categories: Hard Skills, and Soft Skills. On the Hard Skills side we look at health and safety, fundamentals expansion, legal issues, and so on. On the Soft Skills side we look at specific skills training and enhancement. The purpose of this training is to improve the employability of workers in Ontario, and to open up the vast opportunities to those workers who take a proactive approach to career management. The above mentioned training categories, are rather broad in definition and scope, therefore in the following sections a more detailed description of the sub-categories and individual topics will be provided. For a complete listing please refer to our Course Descriptions. FundamentalsThe construction industry is ever evolving, and the worker must have a solid grasp of the fundamentals. In order to equip trainees with the tools to succeed, the Laborers’ Union includes the following courses as standard in all programs:
Health and SafetyThe focus on Health and Safety is a powerfully expanding trend in recent years with the Ministry of Labour as the driving force through increased legislation and enforcement. The only way to stay ahead in the industry is to adopt a proactive approach; the Labourers’ International Union of North America has long encouraged members to take part in health and safety issues and training. In fact a member in good standing can participate in key health and safety programs at no charge. For the member who applies him/herself and attains all of the key health and safety certificates, they receive a certificate of special recognition as a health and safety professional, and is recognized as a “Competent Person” under the Occupational Health and Safety Act in this area of study.
